Discussion Groups

The major industries in the Lakes District are Forestry, Agriculture and Tourism, with timber harvesting and lumber production being the dominant contributors to the local economy. Since its arrival in 1998, the Mountain Pine Beetle has devastated local area forests and is threatening community stability. The economic survival of Burns Lake is dependent upon the transition from a forest dependent economy to a diversified economy. A proactive approach is critical to ensure a successful transition.
LEDA’s involvement is to explore, promote and aid in the development of value added initiatives in Forestry, Agriculture, Tourism, Mining and Alternative Energy. The formulation of grassroots Discussion Groups is one of LEDA’s chief tools for initiating economic change. Community-based sector groups represent the geographical and cultural diversity of the area. Decisions related to independent discussion groups come from the community. LEDA assists with implementing action items and ensures that all Discussion Groups are aware of each group’s initiatives.
Discussion Groups are comprised of local stakeholders and interested residents. All meetings are held at the LEDA office, located across from the College of New Caledonia in Burns Lake, on a monthly basis and are open to all members of the public. The following are highlights from Discussion Group as well as examples of initiatives and accomplishments.
