Agriculture Discussion Group

Third TUESDAY of every month @ 5pm at the LEDA Office

hay bales The Lakes District Agriculture Sector is taking a proactive approach to increase its economic contribution to the overall economic stability of the region by promoting and encouraging diversification into various agriculture fields and sub-sectors. Agriculture in the Lakes District has primarily focused on raising cattle. However, in recent years, farmers and ranchers have expanded local production to include specialty livestock, such as Alpacas, Llamas, Emus, and sheep. Through collaborative partnerships with various community organizations and interested citizens, the Agriculture Discussion Group is credited with the following initiatives:

• Encouragement of “natural” agriculture production
in the Lakes District;
• Promotion of local products through marketing
campaign;
• Agro-forestry opportunities;
• Farmer’s Market expansion to include a permanent
structure and a large attached greenhouse;
• A well attended Agriculture Forum to openly discuss
the challenges, successes and potential direction of
Agriculture in the Lakes District;
• Branding initiative to label (brand) local agriculture
products throughout North America and Europe;
• Development of an agriculture DVD (with local
suppliers, etc) for distribution to investors.
