Recent reports indicate that in 2007 the provincial and federal governments invested over $416 million in mining exploration. There are over 50 active mines in all of Canada – 33 of which are located in BC. Locally, expansions are being made to existing mines and new deposits are being found through exploration activities. The Lakes District is filled with untapped mining resources. LEDA’s Mining Discussion Group sees opportunity for mining to become a strong force as a contributor to the local economy. The group is working on the following initiatives: |
Development of a mining database to include local
support services and contact information;
• ‘Rock Sample Gathering Station’ to be developed
– minerals then mailed off for analysis;
• Mining exploration analysis of the area;
• Mining Claims computer availability for area
residents to register their claims on-line.
